Parent Involvement at Westland

All families participate in a few ways throughout the year:

  • Join a Hot Lunch Team(at least one parent/guardian per family)

  • Serve on a Westland Committee(at least one parent/guardian per family)

  • Complete Work Hours(6 hours per two-parent family; 3 hours per single-parent family)

  • Support Fair shifts(each parent/guardian participates)

In addition, some families choose to take on leadership roles such as those described below. If you are interested in volunteering for one of these roles this year, or in a future year if space is limited, please complete the interest form here. We will follow up as we begin organizing roles for the year.

Parent/Guardian Volunteer Opportunities

At Westland, parent and guardian involvement plays a meaningful role in shaping the life of the school. The roles below offer different ways to connect, contribute, and help strengthen our community.

Room Parent (2 per group)
Room Parents help support communication and connection within the class, partnering with teachers to share updates and coordinate a few simple moments during the year, such as gatherings or culminations. They also help organize staff appreciation collections in the winter and at the end of the school year.

Host Family (20–30 families)
Host Families help welcome new families into the Westland community. This might include reaching out over the summer, connecting before the school year begins, and being a friendly, familiar point of contact as new families find their footing.

Admission Docent (8–10 people)
Docents support the admission process by leading tours, attending events, and occasionally connecting with prospective families to share their experience of Westland.

Hot Lunch Chair (2–3 people)
Hot Lunch Chairs help oversee the hot lunch program, working with Debbie and a team of parent volunteers to coordinate logistics, communication, and occasional menu planning.

Hot Lunch Captain (18 people)
Hot Lunch Captains lead small teams to prepare and serve lunch on assigned days. This includes organizing ingredients, guiding the team, and supporting a smooth and enjoyable lunch experience for students.

Admission Docent (8–10 people)
Docents support the admission process by leading tours, attending events, and occasionally connecting with prospective families to share their experience of Westland.

Trustee
Trustees serve on the Board and are elected through a formal process. Expressing interest here allows for connection with current trustees to learn more about the role and potential pathways to involvement.

If you are interested in volunteering for one of these roles, please complete the interest form when it is shared with families each spring.
