Giving

Westland’s history of philanthropy is well documented. Founding families and founding educators gave of their time and resources to establish a school that exists as a model for democratic and progressive education. In the early-sixties community members mortgaged their homes to secure Westland’s current campus.

Tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating each child, and the difference is made up with fundraising. Fundraising income is sourced from a variety of activities that also have community building as a component. All are invited to celebrate by participating in a way that is both comfortable and generous.

  • Annual Giving kicks off in the Fall (usually October) but can last the entire fiscal year. The funds raised make up most of the fundraising goal (the “Gap” in the budget) for the school year. All community members - including alumni and their families, grandparents, former staff, and other extended community members - are invited to participate.

  • The Winter Fundraiser takes place before Spring Break. It usually involves a party with ticket sales that cover costs along with other items for sale and auction at the event. Current community members usually participate.

  • Westland has partnered with an online auction company called CharityBuzz. People in the current Westland community can donate their time and/or resources in their professional field (such as a pitch meeting or an acting lesson) or high end items (such as sports memorabilia, collectibles, couture clothes or accessories) for sale on this international online auction platform

  • At any time of year as needed, we may ask the current community to help fund immediate projects that are otherwise unbudgeted (such as a chicken coop refurbishment, a new play structure, or elaborate science equipment).

  • Book Sales, Farmers’ Markets, and the annual Westland Fair also help support the budget. All community members (including alumni and their families, grandparents, former staff, and other extended community members) are invited to participate.

If you have any questions, we invite you to contact Jennine Rodriguez, Assistant Head of School for Teaching, Learning, and Development. Every gift, regardless of its size, is appreciated and sends a strong message that you are committed to our students and their education.
